Astana, 19 October. On Rescuer's Day, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev presented state awards to emergency service workers at the Akorda and said that most accidents with numerous victims could have been avoided if everyone had done their job conscientiously (Ulysmedia, Informburo).

"We must honestly admit that the source of many disasters is people themselves. The carelessness and negligence of some people have grave consequences. Overall safety is built from the culture of behaviour of each person," Tokayev said. Respect for the law, discipline and care for the environment, he added, should be instilled from a young age (Ulysmedia).

The president cited the service's record: over five years, Kazakh rescuers responded to more than 750,000 emergency calls. Under the Auyl Qutqarushylary (Village Rescuers) initiative, about 300 fire stations have been built, which, he said, helped prevent about 450 fires (Tengrinews). Tokayev instructed that the experience be extended to all regions (Kapital.kz).
