Abyei, 20 October. A drone strike on a market in the disputed border region of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan has killed at least 153 people and injured dozens; a fire at a nearby fuel depot was still burning on Tuesday.
Local officials blamed Sudan's army for Monday's strike. The death toll was given by Yohana Akol Ngor, head of information for the South Sudanese administration of Abyei, as quoted by Sudans Post; other reports put the death toll above 220 and say the strike hit the Amiet market.
Abyei is a disputed territory on the border between the two countries, claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan; its status was never settled after South Sudan became independent in 2011. Sudan, meanwhile, is in a civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
