Khorgos, 22 October. KNB border guards at the Khorgos International Centre for Cross-Border Cooperation stopped an attempt to take 620 saiga horns to China, which could be worth about 180 million tenge on the black market, the National Security Committee said.
The consignment was seized on 20 October. "The KNB Border Service continues its work to stop illegal activity on the State Border," the agency said. The case materials will be passed to the competent authority, which will take a procedural decision; other details, including who was carrying the horns, are not being disclosed under Article 201(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
What it means: A consignment of saiga horns valued at 180 million tenge on the black market was seized at the largest crossing on the border with China; who was carrying it has not yet been disclosed.
Who benefits: The KNB calls the seized goods a "derivative," the legal term for parts and products of wild animals and plants; the agency gives the consignment's value at black-market prices. The recipient in China and the sender in Kazakhstan have not been named.
Background: The KNB also reported another large case this week: according to Kazinform, the agency uncovered the smuggling of oil products worth 45 billion tenge through the port of Aktau.
