Gualeguaychú, 23 October. Kazakhstan's Maxim Bogatyrev won the para canoe world championship in Gualeguaychú, Argentina, covering 8 km 200 m in 58 minutes 03.17 seconds; he beat Brazil's Gabriel Nunes, who finished second, by 9 minutes 11 seconds.

The victory came on the first day of competition. A canoe is a boat paddled with a single-bladed paddle; para canoe is a discipline for athletes with musculoskeletal impairments. In the coming days Bogatyrev will also compete in kayak events, where a double-bladed paddle is used.

What it means: The Kazakh athlete became world champion with a huge margin, and he still has kayak races ahead.

Who benefits: The athlete and Kazakhstan's para canoe team gain a title and ranking points.

Background: The world championship is taking place at the same time as the Asian Para Games in Japan, where Kazakhstan's team already has 47 medals.
