Astana, 23 October. At 14:59 on 23 October a 110-kilovolt overhead power line, Dostyk–Airport, tripped in Astana, leaving customers connected to the Airport, Zarechnaya and Ishim substations without electricity for 17 minutes, Astana-REC JSC told Tengrinews.kz; in addition, planned outages will continue in several districts of the capital until 29 October.

Power was fully restored at 15:16, according to Astana-REC. Residents told Tengrinews.kz of outages around Mangilik El Avenue, Turkestan, Koshkarbayev and Kerey and Zhanibek Khandar streets and elsewhere. "Emergency crews are inspecting the power line to identify the causes of the incident," the company said. The cause of the failure had not been named by the evening of 23 October.

Separately from the failure, Astana-REC is carrying out planned temporary power cuts in several districts of the city from 23 to 29 October. They are linked to network maintenance, tree trimming and other work on electrical equipment. On 23 October, cuts were scheduled in the Almaty, Baikonur, Nura and Saryarka districts. The company publishes the daily schedule with addresses in advance, and residents should check it so as not to be left without power at an inconvenient time.

The planned work on the grid coincides with the cold snap: forecasters expect unfavourable weather conditions in Astana overnight into 24 October, and a storm warning has been issued across the country.

What it means: A brief failure on a single 110-kilovolt line cut power to three substations and several neighbourhoods of the capital at once. Planned outages will continue for another week, and it is best to check the schedule in advance.

Who benefits: Maintaining the grid before winter reduces the risk of major failures in frosty weather, which benefits all customers. The inconvenience falls on residents and businesses in districts where power is cut during the day.

Background: Astana-REC JSC is the capital's regional power grid company; it is responsible for the city's distribution networks and announces planned outages on its pages and through city media.
