Shymkent, 24 October. Doctors at Shymkent City Hospital No. 2 have saved a baby boy, Alan, born on 22 August 2026 weighing 840 grams and measuring 31 centimetres; after about 60 days of treatment his weight reached 2.4 kilograms and he was discharged home, Zakon.kz reports, citing the outlet Otyrar.

Immediately after birth the baby was put on a ventilator and later moved to CPAP therapy, a method in which air is delivered to the airways under constant low pressure to keep the lungs from collapsing. He was fed through a tube, and doctors monitored his condition around the clock.

Nasiba Korganbayeva, head of the neonatal intensive care unit, said his condition changed during treatment and there were difficult periods. The boy's mother, Aisha Kankhodzhayeva, said the first days after her son's birth were especially hard for her.

What it means: A baby born weighing less than a kilogram nearly tripled his weight over two months in intensive care and went home.

Who benefits: The family, who have a healthy baby at home. The hospital's doctors, whose work with extremely premature babies is recognised.

Background: Medicine classifies babies born weighing under 1,000 grams as having extremely low birth weight; their care requires intensive treatment, mechanical ventilation and long-term monitoring.
