Bobojon Gafurov, 23 October. Two 110 kV substations, Arbob and Yova, have been commissioned in Bobojon Gafurov district of Tajikistan's Sughd region and are expected to cut electricity losses in local networks from 16% to 7% and from 34% to 14% respectively, Asia-Plus reports, citing the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.
The opening was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Usmonali Usmonzoda and the chairman of Sughd region, Rajab Ahmadzoda. To connect the Arbob substation in the Unchi jamoat, 12 km of power lines were laid; it will relieve the Rumon, Unchi, Leninabad and Sitora substations. The Yova substation in the jamoat of the same name will take load off the Goziyon, Yuzhnaya and Abuali ibni Sino substations.
Power losses are electricity that is generated but never reaches consumers: it is lost as heat in overloaded wires and transformers or consumed without metering and payment. According to the ministry, network losses in Tajikistan totalled 3.992 billion kWh in 2025, or 15% of the electricity in the grid, 482 million kWh less than in 2024.
Tajikistan faces electricity shortages every autumn and winter as consumption rises. The authorities expect the new substations to reduce the risk of outages during this period. The cost of construction was not disclosed.
What it means: In one district of Sughd region, grid losses are set to fall by more than half. For a country with winter power shortages, this adds to real supply without building new power plants.
Who benefits: Residents and businesses in the district get more reliable power in winter. Tajikistan's power system gets lower losses and less strain on old substations.
Background: In 2025 network losses in Tajikistan fell by 3.6% from 2024; the ministry calls reducing losses one of the industry's priorities.
