Astana, 26 October. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his election victory and re-election to a fourth term, publishing a message on his page on the social network X.

"I congratulate you, President @LulaOficial, on your well-deserved victory in the presidential election. The Brazilian people have expressed support for your course aimed at strengthening national sovereignty, raising Brazil's standing as a significant world power, advancing the reform of the United Nations and building a just world order," Tokayev wrote.

Lula won the run-off on 25 October: after all votes were counted, Brazil's electoral court announced that 51.8% of voters had backed him. His opponent was Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party. Lula is the first candidate in Brazil's history to win an election after coming second in the first round.

On the same day Tokayev thanked heads of state and government and international organisations for their Republic Day greetings and sent a congratulatory telegram to Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on Austria's National Day.

What it means: Kazakhstan was among the first to respond to the Brazilian result, and its message highlighted what brings the two countries' positions together: UN reform and a "just world order". The congratulations came as Lula's rival refused to accept the result.

Who benefits: Kazakhstan maintains political dialogue with Latin America's largest economy. In the wording of earlier Akorda messages, Brazil is Kazakhstan's important and reliable partner in South America.

Background: Tokayev and Lula exchange greetings every year on Brazil's Independence Day; in a 2023 telegram the Kazakh president called Brazil an important and reliable partner in South America. Brazil is a member of BRICS together with Russia, China, India and South Africa.

We have also reported that Lula won a fourth term after losing the first round.

Vision. Reality. Kazakhstan.
