Brussels, 20 October. NATO announced its intention to strengthen its position in the Black Sea, committing intelligence, monitoring and drone expertise to the effort, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said on X.
The decision comes amid mounting anxiety as Russia's war on Ukraine reaches NATO's borders and strikes hit vessels carrying agricultural cargo, The Guardian reports.
The Black Sea is the route for Ukrainian grain to world markets and the border of three NATO members: Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. In wartime Turkey lets warships through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles only with restrictions under the Montreux Convention, and NATO announced precisely intelligence, monitoring and drone expertise.
What it means: NATO is responding to strikes on ships in the Black Sea not with new warships but with surveillance: intelligence, monitoring and drone expertise.
Who benefits: The winners are above all shipping carrying Ukrainian grain and the alliance's three Black Sea members — Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria — on whose borders the war is being fought.
Background: NATO announced the expanded presence in the Black Sea region on 20 October.
