Tampa, 20 October. Lebanon and Israel began military and technical talks under US mediation at the headquarters of US Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa, Florida, diplomatic sources in Beirut said.

At the meetings the sides are reviewing implementation of the "framework agreement" signed in June and discussing "pilot areas" in southern Lebanon from which the Israeli army is due to withdraw. The talks are part of US efforts to monitor implementation of the agreement amid continued Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, Anadolu reports.

CENTCOM is the unified command of the US armed forces responsible for the Middle East and Central Asia.

What it means: Lebanon and Israel have moved on to the military and technical details of the June agreement: under US mediation they are discussing from which "pilot areas" of southern Lebanon the Israeli army is to withdraw.

Who benefits: Residents of southern Lebanon could gain if the withdrawal begins, as could the US as the mediator overseeing the agreement; for now, Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon continue.

Background: The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said its operations in the south of the country continue.
