Akmola Region, 24 October. On 23 October, at the 163rd kilometre of the Astana–Atbasar–Zhaksy highway, the driver of a Chery Arrizo 8 hit three road maintenance workers who were on the carriageway without high-visibility vests; one died at the scene and two were taken to hospital, the Akmola regional police department said.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. The statement does not say whether there were roadworks signs on the section, how fast the driver was going or what injuries the victims suffered.
The police specifically mentioned the absence of high-visibility vests: workers on the carriageway are required to wear them so that drivers can see them from afar, especially at dusk and in bad weather.
What it means: A road worker was killed on the highway; police point out that the workers were not wearing high-visibility clothing.
Who benefits: The sources do not name anyone responsible; the investigation will determine whether the driver or the organisation that failed to ensure safe working conditions will be held liable.
Background: Overnight into 24 October, because of the cold snap and blizzards, the Emergencies Ministry closed road sections to lorries in Akmola and four other regions.
