Toledo (Spain), 28 October. Two high-speed trains collided in the morning in the province of Toledo on the Madrid — Andalusia line, between Los Yébenes and Urda; according to the latest figures from Spanish broadcaster Antena 3, at least 50 people were killed and 179 injured, TASS reported.

The collision occurred at 08:54 local time, according to the 112 emergency service of Castilla-La Mancha. Esther Padilla, a spokeswoman for the regional government, told broadcaster TVE that both trains were travelling in the same direction, from Madrid to Seville, and that one ran into the rear of the other, which had stopped, derailing two carriages that fell down an embankment, France 24 reported. The crash involved an AVE train of state company Renfe and a train of private operator Iryo; high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended. Urda's mayor Manuel Galán opened a sports hall for the injured at the request of the emergency services.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote that he was shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo and expressed support for the victims and their families. The cause of the collision has not been officially named.

What it means: This is Spain's second major high-speed train disaster this year and, judging by the death toll, the worst; both involved trains of the same operators on the same line.

What we know now: The death toll may rise: the rescue operation is continuing and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Background: In January 2026 an Iryo train derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba province and collided with a Renfe train, killing 46 people. Spain has the largest high-speed rail network in Europe.
