Ayagoz, 19 October. The Abai region prosecutor's office has found more than 100 cases of systematic physical and psychological abuse of residents — children with special needs — by orderlies at the Ayagoz District Special Social Services Centre, who took advantage of the children's helplessness (Informburo, Zakon.kz).

The inspection also found inaction by some staff members, in whose presence the unlawful acts were committed and who did nothing to stop them (Informburo). A pre-trial investigation has been opened; those involved have been suspended from work and barred from contact with the children (Zakon.kz, Tengrinews).

The Prosecutor General's Office published video from the institution; according to prosecutors, the inspection is continuing (Zakon.kz, Tengrinews).

Background: Special social services centres house and care for people who cannot manage without constant help, including children with disabilities; other outlets have also reported the violations at the Ayagoz centre (Liter.kz).
