Almaty, 25 October. Russia's Daniil Medvedev beat Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-3 in the final of the ATP 250 Almaty Open and won the tournament for the second year running.

The match lasted 1 hour 50 minutes. Basilashvili took the first set on a tie-break, after which Medvedev conceded one game in the second set and three in the decider. The Russian served 22 aces and converted four of ten break points; the Georgian converted neither of his two. Before this tournament Medvedev had never won the same event two years in a row: Almaty was his first successful ATP title defence. The trophy is the 25th of his career and his fourth of the 2026 season.

Basilashvili started the week in qualifying and won six matches in a row before the final, including one against Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas. It was his first ATP final since Doha in 2022; after the match he put the defeat down to fatigue after seven matches and problems with his serve. Ranked 128th before the tournament, he rose to 98th after the final, according to the live ATP ranking, and returned to the top 100. The winner took 163,570 dollars in prize money and the runner-up 95,400 dollars.

Medvedev's first title defence came at a tournament that itself only moved from Astana to Almaty in 2024.

What it means: The tournament ended without a Kazakh in the decisive matches: the country's number one, Alexander Bublik, withdrew from his semi-final against Medvedev. For the Russian, the Almaty title filled a gap in his career; for Basilashvili, the week brought him back into the top 100.

Who benefits: Medvedev gains a title, ranking points and prize money; Basilashvili gains ranking places and his best result in four years. The organisers had a former world number one in the final for the second year running.

Background: The tournament has been held in Kazakhstan since 2020: until 2023 it was called the Astana Open, and since 2024 it has been played at Almaty Arena. In 2022 it held ATP 500 status and was won by Novak Djokovic. In 2025 Medvedev beat France's Corentin Moutet in the final. ATP 250 is the lowest category of the Association of Tennis Professionals' main tour: the number is the ranking points awarded to the winner. Medvedev is a former world number one.

We have also reported that Bublik withdrew from the Almaty Open semi-final.
