Astana, 26 October. Under the national Republic Day and Bereke Fest promotions, held for Republic Day from 17 to 27 October, discounts on some goods reach 50%: in Astana sunflower oil is selling for 889 tenge instead of 1,349, the Ministry of Trade and Integration said.

By the ministry's calculation, pasta (400 g) in the same promotion costs 329 tenge instead of 499, and a pack of 30 eggs 1,619 tenge instead of 2,134. Without discounts a notional basket of the three items would cost 3,982 tenge, with them 2,837 tenge, or 29% less. The ministry calculated the savings from information supplied by the regions; the size of the oil bottle and the brands were not given. In the Ulytau, West Kazakhstan, Pavlodar and other regions the discounts apply to food and everyday goods, and in shopping centres to seasonal clothing, footwear, household chemicals and appliances.

Sunflower oil prices in Kazakhstan are rising despite record production. In the year to August 2026 oil rose 7.5% in price, with an average of 904 tenge a litre nationwide; the biggest rise was in the Kostanay region (15.5%). At the same time, the country produced 673,200 tonnes of vegetable oil in six months, 29.1% more than a year earlier.

What it means: The holiday promotions offer noticeable savings on basic foods, but only for a limited time and in certain shops. The "regular" prices cited by the ministry may differ from average prices in official statistics.

Who benefits: Shoppers, while the promotion lasts; retail chains, from higher holiday sales.

Background: Since 2023 the wholesale price of Kazakh sunflower oil for the domestic market has been capped by a memorandum between the National Association of Oilseed Processors and the trade and agriculture ministries at no more than 730 tenge a litre.
