The only gold came from Zarina Tolybay in the over-80 kg category. In the final she faced Russia’s Samira Itonieva and lost the first round 4:1 on the judges’ cards, but took the second, and in the third the referee gave her opponent a standing count. The result was a 4:1 decision for Tolybay.
Three more finalists lost and took silver. Alina Kudaigenova (57 kg) lost to Russia’s Anastasia Golunova, Bibarys Ashirbay (70 kg) to Ireland’s John Donohue, and Vladislav Samozhonov (over 90 kg) to Uzbekistan’s Islam Salikhov. Bronze medals had been secured before the finals by Madira Zhumakhan (51 kg), Indira Kydyrmoldayeva (60 kg), Daniyar Akbisenov (60 kg) and Yerketan Zharkynbek (90 kg).
Russia won the team standings with five golds and five silvers. Second was Uzbekistan with three golds, two silvers and two bronzes, and third the United States with two golds, a silver and two bronzes. With eight medals in total, Kazakhstan finished ahead of Uzbekistan (seven) and the United States (five) on overall count, but with one gold it ended up fourth in the table. Before the finals Kazakhstan shared third place with China by number of finalists, behind Russia with ten finalists and Uzbekistan with six.
What it means: The youth team brought home many medals from Budva but little gold: only one of four finals was won. Neighbours in the region did better in the deciding bouts — Uzbekistan has three champions and second place in the standings.
Who benefits: Kazakh boxing gains a new generation with world-level finals experience before moving up to the senior team; Zarina Tolybay gains a world title in her age group.
Background: The U19 World Championships ran in Budva from 16 to 27 October under World Boxing, the international federation that the International Olympic Committee recognised in 2025 in place of the International Boxing Association (IBA).
We have also reported that four Kazakh boxers reached the finals of the youth worlds in Budva.
