San Francisco, 2 November. Anthropic, developer of the Claude AI models, said in an amended registration statement for a share offering (Form S-1) that in the three months to 30 September it earned revenue of 17 billion dollars, against 11.6 billion in the second quarter and 1.4 billion a year earlier, Fortune writes.

Costs grew faster: operating expenses were 17.5 billion dollars against 10.6 billion in the second quarter. As a result the company again reported an operating loss — 567 million dollars — after an operating profit of 974 million in the second quarter. The net loss for the quarter was 23.3 billion dollars, but, Fortune writes, most of it is an accounting entry tied to the rising value of convertible notes.

For nine months revenue was 33.2 billion dollars, 13 times more than a year earlier, and the net loss was 104 billion dollars, of which 94 billion was an accounting adjustment on financing agreements, the Associated Press reported. The filing does not say how much the company expects to raise or at what price it will sell shares.

What it means: Revenue grew about 12-fold over the year and almost 47% from the second quarter, but growth slowed and costs outran revenue, returning the company to an operating loss. The headline net-loss figures mostly reflect an accounting entry, not current expenses.
