Astana, 4 November, . Under the People’s Construction programme, 262 infrastructure projects worth 1.5 trillion tenge have been approved and 497 billion tenge allocated to 122 of them, first deputy prime minister Nurlybek Nalibayev said at a press conference in the Government.

In total, about 6.5 trillion tenge from the National Fund will go to social, transport and engineering infrastructure in all regions by the end of 2029, Nalibayev recalled. The approved list includes 41 healthcare projects worth 344 billion tenge (hospitals, clinics, perinatal centres, maternity hospitals), 23 culture, tourism and sport facilities worth 266 billion, 28 education projects worth 101 billion, 48 transport projects worth 369 billion (reconstruction of highways, new roads and bridges), 55 water supply and sewerage facilities worth 284 billion (water mains, treatment plants, dams) and 67 heat and gas supply projects worth 136 billion. “This is not just a plan on paper,” the first deputy prime minister said; all 6.5 trillion, he said, will be under the Government’s strict control.

A list of specific facilities and their completion dates was not given at the press conference.

What it means: About a quarter of the 6.5 trillion tenge promised to 2029 has already been allocated to projects, and less than half of the approved projects have received real money.

Who benefits: Residents of regions that will get hospitals, schools and water mains, and the construction companies that will win the contracts; the rules for choosing contractors have not been announced.

Background: The President declared 2027 the Year of Large-Scale Construction; the Infrastructure Development Fund through which the money flows was set up for this programme.
