Astana, November 6. The Aqaba Process summit on “Security in the Field of Artificial Intelligence”, held in Astana, is attended by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and the presidents of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, Akorda reported.
Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Astana the day before. Besides the leaders, the summit is attended by Azerbaijan’s National Assembly Speaker Sahiba Gafarova and Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev; Akorda’s list names other officials too. The full list of participants had not been published earlier: it is now known that Kyrgyzstan is represented by its foreign minister and Azerbaijan by its parliament speaker.
The Aqaba Process, Akorda recalls, is an international initiative against terrorism and violent extremism put forward by Jordan’s King Abdullah II in 2015. The platform brings together heads of state, heads of security services, military bodies and international organisations to build a shared understanding of threats and agree practical responses. Akorda has not yet published the outcome of the meeting.
What it means: Akorda has named the participants for the first time: five leaders are at the table, while Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan are represented at the level of the parliament speaker and the foreign minister. The topic of the meeting is artificial intelligence in security matters.
Who benefits: Kazakhstan, which hosts the meeting with Jordan and presents the region’s view; Jordan, the initiator of the process, which has been given a platform in Central Asia. What the participants decide will be known after the meeting.
Background: The Aqaba Process takes its name from the Jordanian port of Aqaba, where the first meeting was held. A summit is a meeting at the level of heads of state.
