Astana, 2 November. Kazakhstan plans to commission 13.3 GW of new generating capacity by the end of 2029, of which 7.4 GW will be baseload generation, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said at a Kurultai committee meeting, the Energy Ministry reported.

The meeting of the committee on economic policy, industry and energy was devoted to implementing the President’s Address. According to the minister, the projects should cover forecast demand of the population and economy, supply power to prospective artificial intelligence infrastructure and large data centres, and create a 20-percent surplus of generating capacity. In 2027 the expected electricity surplus will be 1.3 billion kWh. At the President’s instruction, the country’s Energy Balance to 2035 is being updated.

The share of renewables in total generation has reached 8.5%; a pool of large solar projects of 900 MW has been formed. By the end of 2035 at least 8.4 GW of renewable capacity is planned, including about 1.8 GW of solar. The national project “Development of coal generation” provides for commissioning and renewal of about 7.8 GW: eight new plants and modernisation of 11 existing ones.

What it means: The dates in the briefing differ: 13.3 GW by 2029, 8.4 GW of renewables by 2035. These are different figures for different periods and cannot be added up.

Background: Solar generation in the plan to 2035 is about 1.8 GW of the 8.4 GW of renewables, while the pool of solar projects formed today is 900 MW.
