Astana, 5 November, . The Kazakhstan–Tajikistan Business Forum was held in Astana on the eve of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon’s official visit: 11 agreements between the business circles of the two countries were signed for a total of 135.3 million dollars, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said.
Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Alibek Kuantyrov took part in the forum. Participants discussed bilateral trade, industry, agriculture, the digital economy and trade, information technology, IT security and artificial intelligence, joint renewable energy projects and wider investment cooperation. By the editors’ calculation, the average sum of one agreement is about 12.3 million dollars; which industries and companies stand behind the sum is not named in the report.
The ministry gave a note on energy. In Tajikistan 98% of power capacity is renewable, mainly hydropower. Kazakhstan’s power system consists of 254 sources, 172 of which are renewable facilities, with total capacity of 27.1 GW, of which 3.8 GW is renewable, about 14%. In nine months of the year the share of renewables in generation was 8.5% against a planned 7%. A pool of solar plants with total capacity of 900 MW has been formed, and by the end of 2035 at least 8.4 GW of new capacity is planned, including about 1.8 GW of solar generation.
What it means: The business programme of the visit began before the presidents’ meeting, but the sum of 135.3 million dollars is signed business agreements, not investment received, and the report names neither industries nor companies.
Who benefits: According to the ministry, benefits of trade, investment and joint renewable energy projects were discussed. Who gets the 135.3 million dollars by industry, the ministry did not specify.
Background: Renewable energy sources are the sun, wind, water and other resources that restore themselves naturally; hydropower plants are counted among them. A gigawatt, GW, equals a thousand megawatts, MW. For comparison, Kazakhstan’s trade with Tajikistan in six months of 2026 grew 1.4 times to 770 million dollars.
