Kraków, November 8. The three people found dead in the attacker’s flat in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski are his 53-year-old father, 52-year-old mother and 20-year-old sister, a spokesman for Poland’s National Police headquarters, Andrzej Fijołek, confirmed, a Polish portal reported.
Speaking on TVN24, Fijołek said police could confirm this “with complete certainty”. According to him, all three have gunshot wounds, so they most likely died from shots. Officers have already removed all the bodies from the flat and seized the weapons found there. Investigative work continues in various places, he added.
The day before, on November 7, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the bodies of three people, presumably family members, had been found in the attacker’s home. The shooting itself took place on Saturday on Kraków’s Main Square: according to the latest figures from Polish authorities, six people died and another 15–16 were wounded; we gave the details in our report on the first results. Together with the six dead on the square, the total number of dead in this case has reached nine.
What it means: It was earlier said that the flat held “presumably” members of the attacker’s family; police have now confirmed it: his father, mother and sister died there. Police are not yet saying who killed them and when, and the attacker’s motive remains a subject of the investigation.
What we know now: The identities of the three dead are confirmed and the cause of death is most likely gunshots. The weapons were seized from the flat and investigative work is under way. Mourning in Poland is on November 8 and 9, in Kraków until November 11.
Background: Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski is a city in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship in south-central Poland, where, as Polish media reported, the attacker lived.
We have also reported on the first reports of the shooting in central Kraków and on six dead and national mourning.
