Kraków, November 8. Among the dead and wounded in the Kraków shooting, besides Poles, are citizens of the United Kingdom, Portugal, Russia, Germany and Austria, Polish Interior Ministry press secretary Karolina Gałecka said, a Polish portal reported.

The identities of all six dead have been established. They are three Polish women aged 61, 47 and 53, a 32-year-old British citizen, a 51-year-old woman who is not a Polish citizen (the authorities have not yet named her country) and a man of about 50, a Polish citizen, a Polish portal writes. Sixteen wounded are in the city’s hospitals, including two police officers and the attacker himself; 12 have “red” status, meaning their lives are at risk, and one of the wounded came out of a coma on Sunday morning. According to Gałecka, one officer’s condition is stable and the other’s serious but stable.

The five wounded foreigners are citizens of Austria, Germany, Portugal, Russia and the United Kingdom, the Polish Interior Ministry’s data show. The condition of the wounded Russian woman is stable, TASS was told at the Russian embassy in Warsaw. Another five wounded are Kraków carriage drivers, according to the Polish portal.

On Sunday the Kraków District Prosecutor’s Office decided to open an investigation into the shooting. Poland’s defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, called what happened an “act of terror” aimed at residents and tourists.

What it means: The attack on the square in Kraków proved international in the make-up of its victims: Poles, a Briton and a woman of another country died, and the wounded include citizens of four more states. An investigation has formally begun, but the attacker’s motive remains the subject of prosecutors’ work.

What we know now: Six dead have been identified, 16 wounded are being treated, 12 of them in life-threatening condition. The Kraków prosecutor’s office is investigating. The authorities do not name citizens of Kazakhstan among the victims.

Background: On Kraków’s Main Square on November 7 at about 15:00 local time a man drove a car onto the square and opened fire on people. The attacker, a 24-year-old Pole, was wounded and detained, and the bodies of his father, mother and sister were later found in his flat.

We have also reported on six dead and national mourning and on police naming the dead at the attacker’s home.
