According to the world media, the vessel was freed after 27,000 cubic metres of sand were removed around it, VRK News reports.

The Japanese company Shohei Kisen, which owns the container ship Ever Given stuck in the Suez Canal, has confirmed that the vessel has been successfully refloated.

The vessel was sailing from China to Rotterdam (the Netherlands). It had previously been reported that the container ship accidentally veered off course because of strong wind.

Now attempts are being made to put Ever Given back on course so that it can continue its voyage.

No date has yet been given for the resumption of shipping. A queue of more than 450 vessels has gathered at the entrances to the Suez Canal.

The Panama-flagged container ship Ever Given, 400 metres long, with a gross tonnage of more than 220,000 register tonnes, blocked the single-lane southern section of the Suez Canal on 23 March because of strong wind and a sandstorm, changing course and wedging its bow and stern against opposite banks of the channel. At first attempts were made simply to pull the vessel off with tugs — their number rose from five to 17 over those days — and then dredgers were used to dig out the bow area.

According to Bloomberg, each day of the Suez Canal blockage costs world trade 9 billion dollars.
