Ningbo, November 7. Kazakh weightlifter Nurgisa Adiletuly told Olympic.kz in an interview how he won silver at the world championships in Ningbo with a 399 kg total and briefly held the world record in the snatch, the National Olympic Committee reported.
Adiletuly won the medal on November 4 in the 95 kg class: he lifted 182 kg in the snatch and 217 kg in the clean and jerk. The 182 kg in the snatch was a world record for a while, but Bulgaria’s Karlos Nasar, an Olympic champion, followed with 185 kg. Nasar won the event with a 415 kg total (185 and 230), and Iran’s Ali Alipour took bronze with 396 kg (181 and 215), Vesti.kz reports. Adiletuly was a silver medallist in the snatch, in the clean and jerk and in the total, that is, he won three silver awards, Baq.kz notes.
The athlete said the world record was the first of his career, “even though I held the record only briefly,” and set himself the goal of beating Nasar’s result. In the clean and jerk he repeated the 217 kg he lifted at the Asian Games and then asked for 224 kg: he had lifted 221 kg in training, but in competition he was not ready for such a weight. In Ningbo he wanted to get back at the Iranian athlete who had beaten him at the Asian Games and, in his words, did. At the Asian Games his snatch result was 177 kg, and he called that start unsuccessful.
The world championships in Ningbo are the first official qualifying stage for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the NOC press service recalled. Adiletuly plans to rest briefly, return to training in December and compete next year at the world and Asian championships and then at tournaments that award Olympic quotas. His main goal, he says, is an Olympic gold medal.
What it means: In a month and a half Adiletuly has become a medallist at two major events, beat at the world championships the Iranian rival to whom he lost at the Asian Games, and earned Olympic qualifying points. His world record in the snatch did not last: Nasar beat it by 3 kg.
Background: Adiletuly is the 2024 world champion in the 96 kg category (Manama, Bahrain), Vesti.kz recalls. He also won silver at the Asian Games, which in the interview he calls his second major award in the past month and a half.
