2022 Oscars marked by a brawl on live television

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony has ended in Los Angeles, where the American Film Academy announced its winners. As VRKNews.kz reports, for the first time since the start of the pandemic the ceremony is being held in its usual large-scale format, and its “home” since 2002 was chosen as the venue — the Dolby Theatre in the Hollywood & Highland Center.

And now the most, so to speak, scandalous part: an Oscars without a fight is money down the drain. On the ceremony's live broadcast Will Smith hit comedian Chris Rock. In his speech the comedian joked about the “amazing, very short haircut” of Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith, which reminded him of the film G.I. Jane. And this when Jada Smith had previously admitted she suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disease that leads to hair loss.

In the video you can see that at first Smith laughed in a restrained way, then went up on stage and hit Rock in the face. The comedian tried not to show it and to laugh it off, and then the sound of the broadcast was cut. According to rumours, the angry Smith shouted that Rock should not dare to say his wife's name.

It must be said that Chris was not the only one that evening to make truly inappropriate quips about the couple.

At the same time, the same Will Smith finally got his first Oscar. Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst were both nominated for best supporting performance but went without awards, as did the tandem of Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Kristen Stewart, who came to the ceremony with her fiancée, missed out in the main category. Benedict Cumberbatch, who was supported by his wife, was also left without an Oscar. The bachelors looked quite modest this time, except that Timothée Chalamet decided to come shirtless.

The Oscar is considered the world's main film award. Among those honoured by the Academy are makers of feature and short films, animation and documentaries, special-effects masters and actors. The American Film Academy sums up the year, so to speak. The golden statuette is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema.

Every year many viewers wait for the announcement of the film of the year, the best actors, director and cinematographer. True, in recent years the ratings of this event have been inexorably falling. While in 2019 a surge of interest in the award was noted, in 2020 only 23.6 million people watched it live. In 2021 that figure halved: only about 10 million people in the USA watched the Oscars.

The ceremony is famous for its red carpet, on which actors show off outfits created specially for the evening. Special attention is paid to the ceremony's hosts, but in the last three years they have been dispensed with. In 2018 this was a forced measure — the announced Kevin Hart was removed from the ceremony after criticism of his homophobic statements on social media. In 2020 and 2021 the Oscars were held in difficult conditions because of the coronavirus pandemic, and it was decided not to invite hosts.

All right, now we tell you who took the coveted statuettes in 2022!
