Kazakhstan approves constitutional reform — referendum results

The amendments to Kazakhstan's Constitution were supported in the referendum by 77.18% of citizens. VRKNews.kz reports this, citing the Central Election Commission for the referendum.

The final results of the referendum were announced by the head of the Central Election Commission, Nurlan Abdirov.

“The proposed changes to the country's Basic Law are considered adopted. The decisions taken at the referendum are binding and do not require additional confirmation by acts,” Nurlan Abdirov said.

The amendments were backed by 6,163,516 people. Against the changes were 18.66% of citizens, or 1,490,470 people.

Voter turnout was 68.05%.

Recall that on Sunday, 5 June, a republican referendum on amendments to the Constitution was held in Kazakhstan. Citizens of Kazakhstan answered a single question: “Do you accept the changes and additions to the Constitution set out in the draft Law ‘On Amendments and Additions to the Constitution’ published in the mass media on 6 May 2022?”

The referendum cemented Kazakhstan's final transition from a super-presidential to a presidential form of government within the plan of political reforms proposed by Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The president's role in forming the upper chamber of parliament has been reduced, his influence on local representative and executive bodies has been limited, and a ban on his membership of political parties for the period of his presidency has been introduced.

In addition, references to the status, powers and privileges of the first president have been removed from the Constitution.

Vision. Reality. Kazakhstan.
