Doha, November 6. Sergeant Assem Orynbay, who represents the Sports Committee of the Ministry of Defence, finished fifth in the final of the world trap and skeet championship in Doha and won an Olympic quota place for Kazakhstan for the 2028 Games, the Ministry of Defence said.
Orynbay competed in women’s skeet and reached the final of eight shooters. Chinese shooters took the whole podium: gold went to Jiang Yiting, silver to Che Yufei and bronze to Jiang Chaoyu, with Slovakia’s Monika Stibravova fourth, the National Olympic Committee noted. Fifth place was enough for a quota place: under the selection rules for the 2028 Games, three quota places are awarded in each individual event at the world championship, and one country may receive no more than one. The first three places went to Chinese athletes, so the remaining two quota places went to Slovakia and Kazakhstan. The quota place is not personal: it belongs to the country, not to the athlete.
What it means: Kazakhstan has won a place at the 2028 Games in skeet thanks to fifth place in the world championship final. The place is tied to the country, so who among Kazakhstan’s shooters will go to the Games remains open.
Who benefits: The Kazakhstan clay shooting team, which has won a place at the Games, and the Sports Committee of the Ministry of Defence, whose club the athlete represents.
Background: Skeet is a form of clay-target shooting: the shooter fires at flying targets launched from two towers, a high one and a low one, crossing the field toward each other; there are eight shooting stations arranged in a semicircle. An Olympic quota place is a country’s right to enter a competitor in an event at the Games. A non-personal quota place differs from a personal one in that it is not tied to a particular athlete.
